RIVERLAND TERRACE

Historic Ft. Pemberton, photo by Peter Evans
Riverland Terrace, developed in the 1940s, is James Island's oldest neighborhood. The Terrace is located just 10 minutes west of downtown Charleston along Wappoo Creek and the inland waterway. The neighborhood boasts a public boat landing , Charleston Municipal Golf Course , a playground, five restaurants and numerous antique shops.

Leading into the neighborhood is the historic Avenue of Oaks, consisting of 73 live oak trees believed to be over 100 years old. They once led to Wappoo Hall Plantation on the Stono River. A Civil War fortification known as Fort Pemberton, built in 1862, remains today.

The Terrace consists of approximately 800 homes. Sizes and prices vary greatly. Starter homes of 900 square feet begin at $200,000. Riverland Terrace has an active neighborhood association that meets 3-4 times each year. The community actively works to preserve the historical integrity of the community, thus contributing to the hometown feel.

Stuff To Do In The Terrace

Riverland Terrace is home to many great restaurants as well as a couple of fun places to hang out. As we mentioned earlier, the Charleston Municipal Golf Course is right in the neighborhood. Residents of the Terrace love going over to catch a movie at the historic Terrace Theater, followed by a drink and an amazingly fresh wood fired pizza from Crust Woodfired Pizza.

Other fun outings in the Terrace might include grabbing some tacos and a freshly made margarita at the neighborhood favorite Zia Taqueria. You may want to enjoy some original music, a coffee and a craft beer from How Art Thou Cafe. In between meals you can walk off the calories while browsing all of the neat shops the Terrace has to offer. Still hungry, head over to the Mustard Seed to enjoy a beautiful plate of well prepared food and some warm bread for the table. Order your favorite bottle of half priced wine on select nights!

Head across the road to heat up the night, or enjoy some mid-day music and fun at the Charleston Pour House. Weather you are going out late or just for happy hour, The Pour House has something for you. Enjoy free music on the back patio from six to nine and head in for the main act if you want to stay late. The Pour House exemplifies the best in professional music production that Charleston has the offer! However if music is not your thing, just walk next door to The Lot. Have an amazing dinner or brunch at one of Charleston's finest local, chef-inspired, farm to table restaurants. Enjoy a regularly changing seasonal menu with awesome food!
